What is Dog Training?

Dog Training provides a foundation for good behaviour and teaches them how to interact with different challenges. It also provides mental stimulation for your dog, which, when coupled with exercise, will leave your dog mentally and physically enriched at the end of the day.

Obedience training doesn’t have to be stiff and formal - we offer a range of fun and interactive programs that cater to a range of dog and owner needs. From getting started with Puppy Classes, to more intensive 3-week programs, we cater to dogs of all shapes, ages, and sizes.

We Cater to Dogs of All Shapes, Ages, and Sizes

You may have heard that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but all dogs are able to start their training journey regardless of age, and we have programs for all shapes and sizes.

We start with puppy school for families who have just welcomed a new puppy, but we know that training doesn’t stop there. That’s why we have a range of programs to help cater for all kinds of dogs and their needs.

Trained By Our Experienced & Professional Dog Trainers

In today’s society, there are so many methods for training and many trainers that will have conflicting views. So how do you choose the right trainer and dog training program? The answer is that it will depend on your dog! Just like we respond differently to different teachers, your dog will also have a different response to different training methods.

Our trainers are certified, have years of experience under their belts, and have also worked with all kinds of dogs. They have a passion for bettering the lives of our furry friends and are committed to the best care for them too. Our trainers will work to find methods that your dog best responds to and use that to reinforce the training throughout their journey.

Pulls on Lead

One of the biggest challenges pet parents find is that their dog will pull on the lead, and this behaviour can cause a number of injuries in both you and your dog. While there are many different collars and harnesses that try to help mitigate this, why not stop it at the source and get your dog to walk on a loose lead?

It’s one of the most common problems we have and our trainers often work to rectify this behaviour in your dog, helping them focus on what’s on the end of the lead instead, which is you!

Jumping to Greet

You might find that your dog will jump up to greet people, and then our guests will also often give the dog attention. Your dog will see this as a positive sign, reinforcing this behaviour. Unfortunately, not everyone likes dogs jumping on them (who would have guessed!).

By working on stopping this behaviour, our trainers can help to give your dog a different task to do instead of jumping, whether it be sitting, lying down, or going to a certain place (like their bed).

Jumping to Greet

Does not Listen to You or is Disobedient

Your dog not listening or being disobedient doesn’t mean you’re a bad dog owner. In fact, dogs are very simple creatures and react in the moment to better their situation.

All dogs can be taught to listen better with the right help, and this can provide better communication with your dog. After all, how can your dog listen to you if they’re not sure what you’re asking for?

Not only do we work on helping your dog’s behaviour, but understanding the why behind how their brain works also helps you to improve your relationship with your dog.

Excessive or Erratic Barking

While barking is a natural behaviour for dogs, excessive barking can become a nuisance for you, neighbours and your dog. There are many reasons that they may bark excessively, and is generally a sign of underlying issues, and this is how your dog communicates this.

As pet owners, it’s up to us to understand what our dogs are trying to tell us and identify why they’re distressed. Our trainers can also assist in desensitising them from the stimuli causing them to bark, allowing them to remain calm and finding ways to mitigate this behaviour in the future.

Excessive or Erratic Barking

Chewing on Furniture or Clothing

Chewing on things in the world around them is natural for dogs, but destructive chewing brings a new level of unwanted behaviours. It’s important to understand what is normal chewing behaviour and what is due to other issues, such as lack of stimulation, stress and frustration, or even separation anxiety.

We can “dog-proof” our homes, but our trainers can also assist our dogs in finding appropriate things to chew and help you understand the benefits of enrichment for your dog. This can lead to less destructive behaviour, which will leave everyone much happier!

Chewing on Furniture or Clothing

Aggressive to other Dogs or People

Aggression is one of the most common and serious behavioural problems in dogs. It’s also the number-one reason why pet parents seek professional help from behaviourists, trainers and veterinarians.

It’s definitely one of the most unwanted behaviours in dogs, and our trainers have plenty of experience helping to minimise this behaviour in dogs. Being able to remain calm when other dogs and people are around is an invaluable skill that your dog would benefit from.

Separation Anxiety

With many pet parents going back to office work, there are many pets experiencing separation anxiety now as they’ve never been away from their owners for longer periods of time. Often, separation anxiety is the reason for destructive behaviour because your dog doesn’t have an outlet for their distress and hasn’t learnt that it’s okay to be away from you.

Desensitisation is a great method of training as the process can change your dog’s emotional response to your departure. Our trainers will assist your dog in understanding that being away from you can be a good thing and that they can relax even when you’re not there.

Dog Training FAQ’s

Do I need to bring anything to Dog Training class?

Please ensure that your dog’s vaccinations are all up to date and that our team has sighted a certificate. Other than that, all the tools needed for training will be provided.

Does my dog need to be vaccinated and desexed before attending dog training?

Aside from puppies in puppy school (who will need their puppy vaccinations), dogs must have a current C5 (or equivalent vaccination). We are able to train dogs who are not desexed. However, we don't take any dogs in heat for adult training programs. If your dog comes into heat during their stay, they will need to be picked up within 24 hours for the safety of all other dogs.

How many dogs are in each training class?

In puppy school, there are generally around 8 other puppies learning the foundations for the first time.

Our Board & Train program offers 1-on-1 training for each dog and their dedicated trainer. While we may group other dogs to help with desensitisation or learning how to act around other dogs, they will have their own trainer also teaching them.

Can I bring my partner / family / kids to dog training?

In puppy school, we allow a maximum of 2 people to attend the training sessions.

For the Board & Train program, we host 1-on-1 handovers to ensure your trainer goes through all the progress made during their stay.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel a dog training session?

Please inform us as soon as possible if you need to reschedule or cancel your dog training session.

How old does my puppy have to be in order to attend puppy school?

Puppies must be younger than 6 months to attend Puppy School.

What is the best training method for dogs?

It will depend on what your dog responds to the best! Every dog is different, and we’ll tailor our methods based on what works best for your dog.

How many training sessions does my dog need?
